My parents, Will, and I went on the White House Tour the morning of M&M’s wedding. You’re not allowed to bring a camera, so I don’t have any pictures of that excursion. We went through a couple of checkpoints with guards checking our IDs and then through a small building to get scanned.
There was kind of a long line to get in and see the rooms, but the wait turned out to be somewhat amusing. A small group bypassed the line and were let through a glass door into the garden. We wondered who they were because they were given access to a private area and had a cameraman in tow. Well, we didn’t have to wait long because some of the younger girls behind us started making a commotion about the guys from Nickelodeon! Obviously, I’m not Nickelodeon’s target age group, so I didn’t recognize them, but it was pretty amusing hearing all of the girls tittering after seeing them. I later asked a guard what was going on, and he said that the group was there to play ping pong with Michelle Obama. She was promoting this event. Here’s a picture of those Nickelodeon kids with her. And… now I officially feel old.
Anyway, the tour was OK. Will and I were a little disappointed, probably because we thought the rooms would be bigger/grander/nicer/etc. I’ve seen other old mansions that were more impressive. It also doesn’t help that the map you’re given points out almost all of the rooms on the first and second floors, but you can only walk through a few of them. Overall, I would recommend touring the White House because it’s the White House and it is of historical and national significance.
